How often have we heard the saying; "Once in a Blue Moon"? A good many times, I'm sure. So what is a "Blue Moon" and just how often do we see it? According to the popular definition, it is the second Full Moon to occur in a single calendar month. The average interval between Full Moons is about 29.5 days, whilst the length of an average month is roughly 30.5 days. This makes it very unlikely that any given month will contain two Full Moons, though it does sometimes happen. We would require a Full Moon on the first of the month and another on the last of the month in order for the second one to be called a "Blue Moon".
There will be a "Blue Moon" coming in 2007 in either May, June or July, depending on what Time zone you live in. The last "Blue Moon" we had in Nova Scotia was on July 31, 2004. |
